Three of the four semi-finalists in the Singles championships, played on 10th July, also came from JPC. Tony Allchurch beat Joan Lewis 13-11 and Matthew Pinel, last year's winner booked his place in the final with a 13-7 win over Dave Grover of Carrefour Club.

COUTANCES VISIT JUNE 2010
Over the weekend of 11th to 13th June, the Club hosted 35 players from Coutances in the 25th year of the two clubs’ association. As usual, the visitors were entertained by their hosts on the Friday night.
On the Saturday, four games were played, two each side of a lunch served at the Club. Each session consisted of 16 doubles games and after the first round, the hosts lead 10-6. The second session saw the same score, meaning that at lunch time, Jersey was leading 20-12. After lunch which usually seems to affect the local players more than the visitors, the third session ended 11-5 to JPC (obviously the Jersey players held back on the wine!) and in the last session, we went from strength to strength, taking it 13-3. This meant that the overall score was 44-20 to Jersey, the highest winning margin for some years.

The morning's play At last - time for lunch!
In the evening, the usual dinner and presentations were held at the Red Rose Restaurant where apart from the top three teams from Jersey and Coutances, a number of pairs received extra special gifts for their achievement of being fannied. Top team for Coutances were Josiette Sauvage & Yvon Chaplet and for Jersey, for the second year running, Dorothy & Gordon de Gruchy.
On the Sunday, a Pig-Roast curtesy of Fiery Fred Paisnel was held at the Club where all the guests and hosts plus some other memebers turned up. There was even enough food left for some visiting seagulls! We look forward to our return trip to Coutances at the end of August.

ANNUAL DINNER & AWARDS 2009
The annual Dinner and awards presentation took place recently at the Red Rose Restaurant, in Trinity.
As usual, the trophies for the competition were presented plus the Player of the Year trophy, which for 2009 went to Keaven Taylor. This was a well deserved win after recording a very good year, in which out of the eight competitions that go toward the title, he came first in five and third in another.

JPC vs CPC - BIRCH CABARET TROPHY
The first round of the Birch Cabaret Trophy took place on Sunday 12th July at the Carrefour terrains in St Lawrence and after four rounds, the result was 34 to 26 to the JPC team.
The second round of the competition was played at the Jersey Petanque Club’s terrains at Les Quennevais. The visitors had to make up the 8 game difference to stand a chance of winning but Carrefour struggled in the first two rounds by losing 10-5 in each. The next two rounds also went to JPC 8-7 and 9-6 this meant that the Jersey Petanque Club won the shield, 71 to 49.
The shield was presented to Club Captain Lawrence Rondel by CPC Captain Chris Romeril.

COUTANCES VISIT AUGUST 2009
Forty members of the Club recently travelled to France to celebrate the 23rd anniversary visit to the Loisirs Corporatifs Coutances. Despite problems with the Granville boats, all the party made it on time.
On the Saturday, 19 teams from each side played four games each in a doubles format, this time, with two games before lunch, to allow more time for the real purpose of the weekend, enjoying our hosts hospitality. Coutances took the first round 11-8 and Jersey the second, 10-9. Obviously invigorated by lunch, Jersey took the third round 11-8, inching into a one game lead; however the food and drink eventually took their toll and Jersey lost the last round 13-6, meaning that overall the French team took the honours 41-35.
The usual Saturday night dinner and prize giving was held again in Gouville-sur-Mer. Following an excellent meal, we were entertained by a local group of Norman dancers, wearing the traditional costumes of villages in the area. Some brave Jersey Club members were persuaded to join in and apart from exhibiting a preponderance of left feet, seemed to enjoy themselves. At the prize giving, top Jersey pair were Ken & Beryl Vibert with Joan & Ron Le Herrissier second and Pru Vibert & Mick Rondel third. The top team for the local club were Dominque Bauche & Gerard Rougeau. Two Jersey teams had the honour of receiving prizes for Fannys but modesty forbids divulgence of their names.

JPA KNOCKOUT CUP 2009
The Magic Touch Knockout Cup final took place at the Weighbridge terrains on Thursday 30th July, between Les Hirondelles and Wrinkleys and was a closely fought affair.

Each team won one of the opening doubles games, with Rosemary and Alf Le Masurier of Wrinkleys beating Lawrence Rondel and Nancy Welsh 13-7, but their team mates Ian Foster and Ron Le Herissier going down to Marion Allain and Mick Rondel of Les Hirondelles 13-2.
In the reverse doubles once again Mick and Marion won for Les Hirondelles (13-6) but Lawrence and Nancy were beaten by Ian and Ron 13-7.
With the match tied at 2 games all and with Les Hirondelles leading on points by 42 to 34 it was all to play for in the final 2 games. Captains Ron Le Herissier and Lawrence Rondel played the single game. This resulted in a win for Lawrence by 13-5, so the Wrinkleys triple team had an impossible task as Les Hirondelles were now 16 points ahead with only a maximum of 13 available. However, Wrinkleys triples gave it their all and won the game 13-1.
Les Hirondelles, who have put out both last years winners and the current league leaders along the way, proved themselves worthy champions winning the match by just 4 points from Wrinkleys who can be well pleased with their performance.
JPA ISLAND SINGLES 2009
The 2009 Magic Touch Island Singles Trophy was won by Matthew Pinel who, now16 years old, repeated his success of two years ago!
The 24 players were drawn into 4 groups and played each in their group. Matthew stormed through the yellow group unbeaten, his closest challenge coming from Darren Le Brun whom he only beat by one point. Keeping it ‘in the family’ Matthew’s dad Keith won four of his five games in the blue group and was only defeated by Rosie Boleat (13-12). Rosie in turn won 3 games and was just beaten by Jeremy Grigg by a single point.
The semi finals saw Keith Pinel taking on son Matthew; the first time a father and son challenge has taken place in the championships. By now the rain which had been threatening all morning, was steady making playing conditions uncomfortable. Matthew started well and gradually pulled away from Keith and completed a convincing win 13-6.
The second semi final was between Toby Northern, competing for the first time in the Island Singles having only starting playing recently in the Condor Lunch Time leagues and Keith Boleat. Toby kept in front and then found himself at 8-4 ahead. A couple of close misses when firing, left Keith unable to beat Toby and their score was also 13-6.
In the final both Toby and Matthew placed well; however the superior firing by Matthew made the difference between the two players. In the pouring rain it was young Matthew who took the honours and the trophy from the less experienced Toby.

JPA ISLAND DOUBLES 2009 - JPC PLAYERS TRIUMPH
This year’s Magic Touch Island Doubles championships were held on 20th June at the new venue of Weighbridge Gardens in perfect weather conditions. 24 teams were drawn into 4 groups of 6, and the winners of each group went into the semi-finals.
Chris Romeril and Steve Foster struggled in their semi final against Dorothy and Gordon De Gruchy and lost 13-3. In the other semi final Jeanne and Ken Le Brun also took time to settle against Tony Morton and Frank Morel but eventually won 13-6.
Both teams made good starts in the final with Jeanne and Ken edging ahead to 6-2 after 5 ends. Dorothy and Gordon pulled back to within 2 points before the Le Bruns moved ahead to 9-5. However a loose next end by the leaders was taken advantage of by their opponents and the scores were levelled at 9 all. From here the De Gruchy’s were not going to miss their chance and they went on to become the 2009 Island Doubles champions with a 13-9 win after 11 ends.

COUTANCES VISIT JUNE 2009
After last year’s disappointment, a win in 2009!
Over the weekend of 12th to 14th June, the Jersey Petanque Club hosted 38 Petanque players from Coutances in the 24th year of the two clubs’ association. As usual, the visitors were entertained by their hosts on the Friday night.
On the Saturday, four games were played, two each side of a lunch served at the Club’s terrains at Les Quennevais. Each session consisted of 19 doubles games and after the first round, Jersey’s determination to avenge last year’s defeat appeared positive with JPC leading 14-5. The second session was a closer affair at 10-9 to the home team. The Jersey players obviously took last years after lunch drubbing to heart and were more careful of their alcoholic intake, winning the third session 12-7. However, the youth of the French team proved more resilient as the day wore on, and the local side lost the last session 9-10. However, Jersey were triumphant overall by 45-31, an impressive margin.
